About the Department

Established in 1962, the Department of Physics at Dinabandhu Andrews College, Garia, Kolkata, has been a cornerstone of scientific education and research within the institution. Affiliated with the University of Calcutta, the department offers undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Science (Honours and General) in Physics. The curriculum is structured under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and the Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF), spanning three years and comprising six to eight semesters, thereby aligning with contemporary academic standards.

The department boasts a team of dedicated and qualified faculty members who are committed to fostering a rigorous academic environment. The faculty includes Associate Professors such as Dr. Suvrakanta Dutta, Dr. Arun Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Phalguni Gupta, Dr. Arunima Chanda, and Dr. Rajsekhar Bhattacharya, as well as Assistant Professors like Dr. Dipanwita Das and Dr. Pradyot Nanda. Their diverse areas of expertise and research interests contribute to a rich and comprehensive educational experience for students.

Supporting the academic endeavours of the department are dedicated non-teaching staff members, including one laboratory attendant Dilip Adhikari. His role is integral to the maintenance of laboratory facilities and the smooth execution of practical sessions, ensuring that students gain hands-on experience in experimental physics.

The Department of Physics is actively engaged in research activities, with faculty members undertaking various projects that contribute to the advancement of the field. These research initiatives not only enhance the academic profile of the department but also provide students with opportunities to participate in cutting-edge scientific investigations.

In addition to its academic and research pursuits, the department emphasizes the holistic development of students by encouraging participation in seminars, workshops, and other co-curricular activities. This approach aims to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong passion for learning among students.
