About the Department

Established in 1956, the Department of Botany at Dinabandhu Andrews College, Garia, Kolkata, has been a cornerstone of the institution's commitment to scientific education. Affiliated with the University of Calcutta, the department offers undergraduate programs in Botany, encompassing both Honours and General courses. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of plant sciences, covering areas such as plant physiology, taxonomy, ecology, and molecular biology.

The department boasts a team of dedicated and qualified faculty members who are committed to academic excellence and student development. The faculty includes Associate Professors Subhasis Saha and Dr. Joy Sarkar, Assistant Professors Dr. Mithun Maji and Dr. Rupa Chakraborty, and SACT-I faculty member Dr. Krishna Choudhury. Their diverse academic backgrounds and research interests contribute to a rich educational environment, fostering critical thinking and scientific inquiry among students.

To support practical learning and research, the department is equipped with essential laboratory instruments, including hot air ovens for drying materials and pan balances for precise measurement of media and biochemical substances. These facilities enable students to gain hands-on experience in experimental techniques, reinforcing theoretical knowledge acquired in lectures.

Beyond the classroom, the Department of Botany actively engages students in co-curricular activities to enhance their academic experience. The department publishes an e-magazine titled "Bio-Scope," which serves as a platform for students and faculty to share articles, research findings, and insights related to plant sciences. This initiative encourages scholarly communication and keeps the academic community abreast of current developments in the field. Also, the department emphasizes experiential learning through regular educational excursions.

In alignment with the college's mission to provide quality education and foster research, the Department of Botany continually updates its teaching methodologies and course content to reflect advancements in botanical sciences. Through a combination of rigorous academics, practical training, and extracurricular engagement, the department aims to cultivate knowledgeable and skilled graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the scientific community and society at large.
